About The Sellers

We (Dave and Sherry McCampbell) are cruisers who met Jerry Waldorf, the now-deceased owner of the Whitby 42, Challenger, in French Polynesia in 2011.  We cruised with Challenger, off and on, from Fiji through the Philippines from 2012 to 2014.  So we have some knowledge of the boat and her capabilities.  Additionally, we recently refurbished our own CSY 44 in Samal, where Challenger is, and subsequently sold her to buy a catamaran.  We are familiar with the marina, the marina’s services, and the environs of Davao and Samal Island.  If you are interested, you can see some of our adventures and our history on our website svsoggypaws.com and svsoggypaws.blogspot.com.

We are not brokers, just friends trying to help the family sell the boat.

Jerry arrived at the Holiday Oceanview Marina on Samal Island in Fall 2014.  He left Challenger in Samal for what he thought was a couple of months in late 2014, for “minor surgery” on his back.  After the surgery he could barely walk, and expected a long recuperation.  So he came back to Samal briefly in early 2015 and had Challenger hauled out, and left the marina a list of cosmetic upgrades to accomplish while he was gone (which for various reasons, the marina never did).

After rehab and several more surgeries, the situation with his mobility didn’t get better and he realized he was not going to be able to continue cruising.  Jerry was just starting to get ready to sell her in April 2016—from afar, with some local help—when he unexpectedly was diagnosed with advanced cancer and died within a short period of time.

We were out cruising for most of 2016, and have now just returned to the marina where Challenger is, and offered as friends, to help Jerry’s daughter sell the boat.

Jerry was a nuclear engineer who retired in 2008 to pursue his dream of sailing around the world.  He was a really smart guy, a good engineer, and was meticulous when equipping Challenger for his big cruise.

He was also a "southern gentleman"...brought up on the eastern shore of North Carolina, fishing and diving and enjoying life on the water.  When I was rummaging his boat, getting it ready for sale, I found this card he had made up:

He was a prince of a guy and we are hoping we can help out his daughter and also pass his beloved Challenger on to start a new adventure with someone else.
